Irradiation
ir•ra•di•a•tion [i-rey-dee-ey-shuhn]
Food irradiation is the process of exposing food to ionizing radiation to disinfect, sanitize, sterilize, preserve food or
to provide insect disinfestation.
The discovery of radioactive substances killing bacteria dates back to 1896. Food has been irradiated since the beginning of the space program; however, it is new to most consumers.
Why are we using irradiation? On what foods? Is it safe? How will I know if selected foods are irradiated?
Explore these and other important concerns, such as how it affects cost, nutritional value, and taste.
Food Technology: Irradiation features interviews with prominent officials in the food industry, in food science and research, and from irradiation regulatory agencies such as the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to add insight into this food safety procedure.
